Saints · Kanakadasa
ಕನಕದಾಸ
Kanakadasa was born into the Kuruba shepherd community, outside the priestly privilege that traditionally produced saints. After a transformative spiritual experience, he turned away from military status toward a life of devotion and social critique.
His challenge to social hierarchy is immortalized in the story of 'Kanakana Kindi'. Denied entry to the Udupi Krishna temple due to his caste, he prayed from outside until the idol itself turned to face him through a small opening in the wall, proving that divine grace cannot be restricted by social gatekeeping.
